The Ethical Dilemma Of Dementia With My Dad - 1169 Words

Introduction So,†¦ My ethical dilemma is to decide whether to ask, or address, what might be very early signs of dementia with my dad. I’ve known him for a long time now and I’m not sure if little signs like telling the same stories over again are really signs of this (I do the same thing sometimes, I forget who I told what or when I told them, hopefully I don’t have dementia†¦), or if they are just normal tendencies and possibly a sign of not seeing each other as much as we did in the past. I mentioned during his last visit that pretty soon he would be able to hide his own Easter eggs and it did not go over well. Is he worried about the same thing? What have my parents talked about with each other without telling me? My grandfather (on my mother’s side though) had dementia and once it turned into a real diagnosis I could look back at things we just thought were funny or a little weird and realize just what was really going on. I wish I had that time back now. Maybe there was a treatment for some of those symptoms. I remember we drove to Florida in my grandparent’s motorhome and he never let the gas tank get lower than three-quarters full. When he would put gas in he would overfill it right up to the gas cap too. We were going up a hill in Tennessee and gas was pouring out onto the road as we drove. I thought it was strange behavior but would have never guessed it was dementia.
